When the Sea Rises

Drifting along the Belgian coast.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For the Belgians who draw or rediscover their memories at the coast, the North Sea is a landscape apart, a horizon, an evocation. Belgium is preparing to face the consequences of climate change. Sea levels are rising faster and faster. We must protect ourselves and take action to limit this change, but nothing will ever be the same again. Nostalgia turns into an impossible journey home.

Birdless

A sonic postcard from Costa Rica

Located between two American continents, Costa Rica is home to almost 900 species of birds. Equipped with parabolic and omnidirectional microphones, Irvic D’Olivier spent long hours in national parks awaiting rare birds. These include, among others, the Roadside Hawk (rupornis magnirostris), the Montezuma Oropendola (psarocolius montezuma), the Red-winged Blackbird (agelaius phoeniceus) and one of the world's noisiest animals, the Black Howler Monkey (alouatta caraya).

Chez Martine

The bar where Belgians still love each other

At this small café in Brussels, guests drink, smoke, and sing away. The regulars are Flemish, Walloon or Brussels locals like the singer Arno. Others come from around the world. While Belgium is culturally fractured, Chez Martine is a small pocket of European solidarity.

Stromboli

A Volcano on the Sea

Four hundred inhabitants live and work at the foot of one of the most active volcanoes in Europe. Indications confirm that the subterranean magma is intensely active. Several times per hour, the crater breathes, loads up and explodes in a large plume. A symbol of life and death, a metaphor of creation and destruction, the volcano confronts us with ourselves and our fears.

Takiwasi

The House of Songs

In a remote corner of Peru, on the edge of the Andes and the Amazon rainforest, young drug addicts come to cure their disease of civilization using a medicine that is much older than the arrival of the civilizers. Purging, dieting, visionary journeys ... the treatment with sacred plants is tumultuous, but diabolically effective.
